Lighting the Way to Financial Well-Being
“Lighting the way to financial well-being” is the purpose of SunTrust Bank. It represents the commitment of each of the bank’s 210 Chattanooga area employees to help instill confidence in the finances of customers who put their trust in SunTrust Bank.
It remains the cornerstone of everything SunTrust does. As one of the nation’s largest and strongest financial services companies, SunTrust offers a full suite of products and services designed to meet the needs of our consumer, business, corporate and institutional clients.
That commitment began in 1884 when Harry S. Probasco, a descendant of Dutch immigrants, moved to Chattanooga from a little river town in Ohio following heavy flooding in that area. He learned there were six banks operating in Chattanooga, but none handled trusts. Wanting to create a solid business which could stand the test of time and natural disaster, he founded Wiehl, Probasco & Co., hoping that business owners in Chattanooga would entrust their wealth to him. Over time, they did just that.
Weathering the country’s economic roller coaster and several panics over the years, Probosco founded the Bank of Chattanooga in 1900, which became the American National Bank five years later. Joined by his son, Scott L. Probasco, Sr., and, later, his grandson, Scott L. Probasco, Jr., in the venture, the bank has now evolved into SunTrust Bank, a financial institution that is proud to be delivering “big bank” products and services at the local level.
“Chattanooga is vibrant city with a diverse economy that has recorded tremendous growth in manufacturing and service industries,” states Scott Probasco, Jr. “The banking and trust business is such an integral part of a community, and you inevitably become involved in things that are about making your city a better place to live. I was swept along in a real love for my community, and I think that’s inherited from both my grandfather and my father.”
